This project imagines a possible future of human civilization. The rapid increase in population and the resulting growth in demand for natural resources raise complex scenarios regarding their availability and use on planet Earth.
This series of drawings brings into dialogue two fundamental aspects of the medium-term future of civilization: the probability of a collision with a Near-Earth Object (NEO) that could cause severe damage or even mass extinctions, and the possibility of mastering its orbital mechanics in order to mine several of these potentially dangerous asteroids. It is only a matter of time before Earth becomes the target of one of these objects again, and it is only in the 21st century that initial asteroid deflection missions have begun, aiming to prevent global catastrophes. There are already several space mining companies seeking to understand and control the behavior of these objects in order to exploit their materials—especially heavy metals—to meet the global demand for mineral resources and, in doing so, reduce, and perhaps even eliminate, the mining practices on Earth that entail significant social and environmental challenges.
This project presents several of these potentially dangerous asteroids as intervened and industrialized objects that could offer an alternative to our energy demands, while also proposing a hypothetical vision of what bodies in the solar system might look like as human exploitation colonizes them—ultimately turning them into drifting rocks embedded with industrial structures in space.
