On July 23, 1973, a fire broke out in a well-known building in downtown Bogotá, leaving 4 people dead and more than 60 injured. That same day, Chilean President Salvador Allende was overthrown by General Augusto Pinochet. A Pan American Boeing crashed in the South Pacific near Tahiti, killing all 79 passengers, and another plane crashed just as it was about to land in the United States, leaving 31 dead. Additionally, a Japanese Airlines plane was hijacked by four individuals. That very same day, an ammunition depot exploded near the presidential palace in Haiti.
